Calligraphy
This work was created from about 2005 to 2007. During this period I was interested in exploring the capabilities of surface design in a two dimensional format. The leaf was really about depicting nature falsely in a clean, plastic, animated style. I wanted to create a more contemporary iconography of nature that felt “removed” from the natural world. With this body of work I was interested in operating more like a designer rather than potter. I was concerned with the more graphic qualities of decoration in combination to an apparent form-language. The objects that were created during this time were fairly exact from one to the next and there was an absence of the hand with in the form. More frequently with this work I was engineering ceramic “components” in order to create more complex pieces that acted as sets.
